Therefore, they will delay the closure permit and they will also make us do a number of other things which could be extremely costly. 

Mr. Ted Williams who is the administrator in charge of many divisions in the State of Arizona will be in Tucson on Thursday, April 2 to attend a reception at the College of Medicine at 4 p.m. It might be a wise political move for the President to meet with Ted and to discuss our concerns regarding Page Ranch with him. The department that is responsible for the closing reports to Ted as Martha would have if she had assumed that responsibility. She has a great deal of faith in Mr. Williams and believes that he is a reasonable person. We also believe that the President could meet with this team of six scientists and disclose a plan to Ted that we are going to have our scientists apply for one of the grants to help us with the hazardous waste site at Page Ranch. For your information, the scientists are well respected by the citizens of Oracle. This could be politically prudent for the President and it might cool down the Oracle residents for several years.” (74) 
 

       While all this was happening, the University found there were additional pressures being directed towards closing the site. Oracle residents had organized and were becoming much more adamant with their demands for the University to stop the dumping of waste at the Page-Trowbridge Ranch. The spirit of Edward Abbey’s George W. Hayduke began walking in the night around the Page-Trowbridge Ranch Landfill. Police reports show the effects of his monkey wrenching moonlight visitations. The removed gates and undone chainlink fences culminated in a threatened daylight demonstration, the purpose of which was to draw attention to the non-existent site security. Shortly thereafter, a brush fire was ignited directly over one of the landfill areas and the Oracle Fire Dept. was dispatched to extinguish the fire. This “civil action” was timed to coincide with the dumping of a load of manure on the lawn
