Pinal County Supervisors approved the rezoning request by Robson Communities Inc. to allow 6,319 dwellings, a commercial center and three golf courses to be built on land next to the Page-Trowbridge raidoactive/toxic waste landfill.

Chairman Ruiz and supervisors Kerr and Smith unanimously approved the request after to listening to opponents to the rezoning proposal explain that:

  • A map, dated Feb. 5, 1962, indicates that unregulated nuclear waste could be present in an unregulated area approximately one-and-a-half miles northwest of the present Page-Trowbridge site.  It was explained to the supervisors that this map and other documents, indicating extensive use of nuclear material in the 60's, had been illegally withheld by the U of A in response to a Public Records Request filed by Oracle resident Web Parton.
The supervisors asked no questions about the map, or the withheld documents.
  • That the University of Arizona withheld information from the ADEQ confirming the detection of contaminants in the groundwater beneath Page-Trowbridge.
The supervisors asked no questions about the about the falsified report that the U of A filed with ADEQ, nor did they ask for copies of the reports from Turner Laboratories that contradicts the U of A's version of events.
  • That the ADEQ mislead the Pinal county board of supervisors in a letter dated March 27, by claiming "no groundwater contamination has been found above background concentrations or drinking water standards".  At the time the ADEQ made this claim they had no records to substantiate it.

  • The supervisors asked no questions about the ADEQ report of March 27.

Local residents are in the process of initiating a referendum to invalidate the rezoning.

During the hearing, Steve Soriano, vice president Robson Communities, Inc. informed the Pinal County Board of Supervisors that money was available for Pinal County if Pinal County would aid in quashing a citizens initiated referendum to invalidate the re-zoning

Ruiz later explained details of the $5.5 million offer by Robson to Dr. John Huntington, an Oracle resident.  Ruiz told Huntington that when first approached by Robson Communities Inc. regarding the development of SaddleBrooke Ranch, Ruiz informed Robson officials that the county needed money to help with playground equipment and other items.  Ruiz told Huntington that Robson Communities Inc. agreed to donate $1000 a house up to 5,500 houses, for a total of $5,500,000.

Apparently Robson will now use this money to fight the referendum.
