In spite
of requests from local citizens to put public safety first and defer re-zoning
and the issuance of building permits for the areas that will depend on
water from the aquifer that runs under a radioactive/toxic waste landfill,
Pinal County Supervisors voted unanimously to allow the expansion of SaddleBrooke
by nearly 4,000 dwellings.
In addition to approving rezoning for SaddleBrooke, the supervisors unanimously
approved
rezoning for Eagle Crest Ranch, a planned community of 975 homes.
The families in Eagle Crest will depend on water from the aquifer that
runs under Page-Trowbridge.
|
The reasons
given for requesting deferrals in re-zoning and building permits included
-
The fact that industrial contaminants have been found in the SaddleBrooke
and Oracle Water supply.
-
The fact that the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality has extended
the post-closure hearings for the Page-Trowbridge landfill until next year.
Completion
of the post-closure process by ADEQ would constitute assurance by
ADEQ that the Page-Trowbridge radioactive/toxic waste dump poses no threat
to public health. |
